Fall Schweden

Storuman, Sweden, September 12, 1943.
22 Turns
2 Players

Axis: Germany
Allies: Sweden

When Norway and Denmark was invaded in 1940, Sweden was at the mercy of Germany, surrounded by axis controlled nation in all directions. The Swedish army was in no state to fight a war and Sweden had to agree to the one humuliating treaty after the other, the most prominent one being the transit traffic, in which Germany was allowed to transport supplies and unarmed troops to and from Finland and Norway on the Swedish railway network. In 1941, the entire German division Engelbrecht, with all components including arms, were transported on Swedish railways from Norway to Finland. But the situation has changed. After 'Fall Blau' and the disaster at Stalingrad, as well as the crippling losses at Kursk, the Germans are not as strong as they once were. The Swedes have spent the three years in a mad scramble for guns, buying American, German and Italian guns, airplanes and ships, as well as producing their own and giving their army the training it did not recieve in the 30s. In august 1943, the Swedes cancel the transition treaty, leaving a furious Führer, as Sweden at the same time defrosts its relations with the western allies. In our time-line, Generalleutnant von Schell and the 25th Panzer Division in Norway had plans ready, 'Fall Schweden', to deal with Sweden rapidly in case of an allied invasion of Scandinavia. 'Fall Schweden' called for two Panzer divisions and two infantry divisions to cut Sweden in half, going through the southern part of Jämtland, while three other division would bind up as much enemy troops as possible further south. The attacks would be supported by a diversionary attack from Finland and Fallschirmjagers dropped on the Swedish airfields in order to cripple the Swedish airforce. The plan was based on speed and shock, depending on suprise to crush Sweden with minimal resources and time. In our time-line, the 25th Panzer never reached full strength and the promised second Panzer division never arrived, due to the losses in tank strength taken at Kursk. In this scenario, a furios Führer reinforces the 25th Panzer to full strength and orders von Schell to attack, despite that only half the forces von Schell need is present. The Swedes, in the meantime, have mobilised large parts of their army and in the way of the 25th Panzer and the supporting 169th Infantry division lies the II MILO, consisting of the 2nd and 12th Divisions, with the 9th and 10th Armoured brigades further back, as reserves. Can von Schell break the Swedish defences and move to Sundsvall and Östersund, or will the German juggernaut stop dead in its tracks in the dense Swedish forests?
