A Short-cut in Printing.

There are many phrases which we all use in our letters, e.g. "For the
attention of" " Dear Mary and William," "Kind Regards," "Best Wishes,"
     "Yours Sincerely," etc, etc.

On Page 2 of the PrinterEd, on the right-hand side, there are nine
Translation possibilities. Only one is in use - to change the #
character ( in the American character set which is used on the Z88 ) to
     the £ sign.

We can use four of these for selected phrases by pressing only two keys -
     the [] ( square ) and either [ \ ] or £.

These produce, respectively, the ASCII characters 155, 156, 157 and 158.
We can enter one of these numbers against "Character" and immediately
under it, against "Changes to", we can enter our chosen phrase, ALWAYS
     between quotation marks, e.g. "Cheerio"

Use the same procedure for three more phrases. Don't forget to use <>FU
to "fix" the alterations. Now use <>FS to save the "new" edition of the
PrinterEd. See note below on the "printer bug".

Having made a note of the translations on a gummed label, stick this on
the front of your printer for future reference.

When you press your selection of [] and either \ [ ] or £ you will
only get a black square on the screen - don't worry, your printer "sees"
a number and it prints whatever you have given this in the PrinterEd,
without the quotation marks you put there.

By the way, next time you go back to the PrinterEd you will find that
your phrase(s) are now converted to ASCII numbers !

The PrinterEd "bug".

A great deal has been said and written about this and frankly, the more
I've listened to and read the more confused I've been. You too?

All you have to remember is that versions of the Z88 before 4.0 have a
"bug" in that the operating system does not recognise the third letter
down in the last column on page 1, under "Off at CR" - it's as if there
     is no letter there.

So, before you save the PrinterEd, just go to this letter with the cursor
and type the letter again. THAT'S IT !

How do you know what version of the Z88 you have? S'easy - go to te
INDEX, press the HELP key, press the LEFT arrow key and read the top
line. Press ESC to get back to the INDEX.

                                                                           END
