J.E.Lawrie HINTS-9. v.2 Pipedream "fiddles". Isn't it annoying when you are looking for a word like `ring' with <>BSE or <>BRP that you get many other words besides the one you're looking for? It can be avoided, but there is a slight drawback; the search cannot be done properly in one attempt - more on that later. You may have seen the piece on "special sequences" in the manual at some time but passed right on, as I did, several times. As I see it, there are two main uses for these sequences. To cover the case mentioned above and to speed up (considerably) any instance when you need to add highlights to words or phrases after the text is complete - adding bold or italics for example. One sequence is ^S which represents a space. If you are looking for and possibly want to replace the word ring then enter it as ^Sring^S Any replacement word, of course, must also have ^S at both sides e.g ^Srang^S BUT if the word ring occurs at the start of a line or at the end of a line which is completely full it will not be picked up. You can get those at the start of a line by using ^Bring^S ^B will search the start, and only the start of every line so it is fast. Any instance of your word at the end of a line you must look for, or use ^Sring as a small aid - it will pick up ringing and rings of course. In a long list file this method will certainly be faster, and perhaps much faster than the conventional method. In a similar way it is possible to add highlights around words and phrases e.g ^Sring^S replaced by ^S^2ring^2^S to make the word stand out in bold or italic or whatever your second highlight is. If there are not many instances of the word and you are not likely to get spurious stoppages then you only need the word itself on the top line and ^2 (or whatever you choose as the highlight) on either side of the word on the second line. PrinterEd bug. `Off at CR' for the EXt. sequence is by default set at Yes. Whether you leave it at Yes or change it to No, if you ever make a change to the PrinterEd ALWAYS go to this particular point and repeat the Yes or No again before saving/leaving the PrinterEd. And, of course you will remember to key <>FU after making an alteration or it won't be altered at all! You can't be too careful in this area. Many instances of FAIL in the OZ operating system are due to lack of care on these points. Do remember - The Z88 MUST be switched on when cards are removed or inserted in the front slots - ALL cards: RAMs ROMs and EPROMs else the OZ doesn't know what is happening and you could well get a FAILure. Before removing a RAM you will OF COURSE transfer any files on it to other RAMs/EPROM/disc ! END Back to HINTS-INDEX
