Brief Description

tiger heli action One of the earlier Toaplan games, the prequel to the more famous Twin Cobra, but still devilishly difficult to play and a lot of fun once you get somewhere. It is maybe not as visually pleasing as some later efforts such as Flying Shark or Twin Cobra, but considering the hardware this is as close to perfection in gameplay as you might get. The game runs on hardware similar to Slap Fight with a little less features.

An interesting thing about Tiger Heli is that you see the bombs on the side of the Helicopter, and if an enemy shot hits one of your bombs, you detonate the bomb instead of losing a life! This is different from all other Toaplan shoot'em-ups

If you are a fan of games such as Flying Shark and Twin Cobra you should check this one out too, and give it a lot of time to learn, because this is one of the gems.

Music and sound created by Tatsuya Uemura.

The game was converted to the NES, published by Acclaim in the US and Canada.

How to play

Shoot all enemies and ground targets, bomb when you have to. There are pick-up crates around the game which you need to shoot to make the pick-ups appear.

green crate

Shoot the crate when it is green to get the bomb (b) pickup

red crate

Shoot it when it is red to get the red chopper (red chopper) which fires sideways on the side you picked it up on

white crate

and when it is white to get the white chopper (red chopper) which fires additional shots forward

diamond crate

The diamond crate appears only for a short time and the disappears, shoot 10 of them to get an extra life. The number of diamonds you have shot is shown in the lower right corner of the screen.

Special targets

race car

The race car will appear on the first railway if you shoot exactly 16 shots and stay below the railway. It is worth 10000 points destroyed!

roof alarm

Shoot this (on top of a building) enough times to get 10000 points!

Play hints

tiger heli action [ Play hints (arcade) ]

Near the beginning there is a "school house" with a red drum on the top. If you hit the red drum enough times, you'll get a 10,000 point bonus.

Blast everything. Civilian cars and houses, etc, all give 50 points each.

Be sure to blast the diamond shape that appears and disappears. Shooting ten of the disappearing diamonds gives an extra life. Diamonds shot are shown on the counter in the lower right corner of the screen. Lives left are shown in the counter on the lower left corner of the screen. You may have a maximum of 5 lives saved.

There are 16 targets between the start of the game and the first set of railroad tracks. If you fire exactly 16 (32, 48, 64, etc.?) shots and keep the heli below the tracks, the race car will cross the tracks. It is worth 10,000 points. This may work on later screens as well(?).

There are four or five helipads in the game. You receive a bonus of 5,000 points for each little heli and bomb you have remaining after you land on the helipad, up to a maximum bonus of 20,000 points.

One target is a square with an alternating red, white, or blue cross on it. Shooting the cross when it is red will give you a side firing little heli. Shooting it when it is white will give you a forward firing little heli. Shooting it when it is blue will give you a bomb. You may only carry two little helis and two bombs. If you already have two little helis, none will appear when you shoot the cross, however, if you already have two bombs a bomb will appear and is worth 5,000 points if picked up.

The large three-gun tanks are easiest to kill with two white little helis.
