Symbols of the Swedish Provinces -

Plants and Animals

Introduction

The Swedish provinces have many symbols from both the biological and the zoological world. The plant and animals chosen for a province are those that are somehow connected to that particular province. There are no provinces with the same provincial symbol. The provincial flowers and plants are the oldest among these type of symbols and date back to more than 100 years ago. Some sources give Professor Carl von Linné in the 1700's as the originator of these symbols. However, this has not been proved. These provincial flowers and plants are called landskapsblommor in Swedish. The provincial animals as a symbol for the provinces are much younger. In 1988, the Swedish branch of the World Wildlife Fund conducted a public vote through the media. All kinds of animals could be suggested except the domesticated animals. The provincial birds are even younger as provincial symbols. In 1995, the Swedish Ornithological Association also conducted a vote to chose these symbols. See Map of the Swedish provinces

In some of the provinces a fish or a bird is also the province's animal. The plants or birds in blue color are plants or birds that I've not yet been able to translate into English. Names of the provincial symbols in Swedish.
