Under the command of Generalleutnant Dietl, the German Gebirgskorps 'Norwegen' prepares itself and marches from Narvik to Petsamo. On June 29, 1941, the attack in the Arctic starts.

The 6th Mnt Division also embarks for Lapland, but is delayed when British Bombers intercept the sea convoy along the coast of Norway and sink one of the accompanying artillery ships.

On March 15th, the German 18th Army launched an operation to restore its previous front line and to trap the 2nd Shock Army in its cauldron. The attack was focused at the base of the army's penetration across the Volkhov River.
Both sides suffered from depleted manpower. No German division was at full strength--with the exception of the 250th Spanish Division. Soviet divisions in some cases numbered 5000 men.
Stavka - so tantalizingly close to splitting the German XXVIII Korps in half--refused to abandon the operation in the face of encirclement. The 2nd Shock Army continued to fight. By May, after the 2 km wide communication strip between the 2nd Shock Army and 59th Army had been cut and restored time and again, evacuation began. Out of some 40,000 soldiers 13,000 had evacuated. The greater majority of the remaining 27,000 perished on the battlefield. The near-destruction of the 2nd Shock Army was also the notorious capture of the Soviet General Vlasov.

In the early hours of April 16, 1945, the battle of Seelow Heights began with a massive bombardment by thousands of artillery pieces and Katyushas. At 03:30, well before dawn, the 1st Belorussian Front attacked across the Oderbruch. The initial assault by the 1st Belorussian Front was a disaster. Colonel General Heinrici and General Busse anticipated the attack and withdrew their defenders from the first line of trenches just before the Soviet artillery could obliterate them. The Soviets attacked by the light by 143 searchlights which were intended to be used to blind the defenders. However, the searchlight illumination was diffused by the morning mist and made the attacking Soviet infantry easy targets as they were silhouetted for the Germans to see. The swampy ground proved to be a great obstacle and the well dug in Germans made Soviet casualties enormous. Zhukov threw in his tank reserves, which in his plan were to be held back to exploit the expected breakthrough. This caused huge chaos and casualties rose again. On April 19, the fourth day of the battle, the 1st Belorussian Front broke through the final line of the Seelow Heights defenses (the point that was the operational goal for day 1) and nothing but broken German formations lay between them and Berlin. 12.000 German soldiers were killed and the gates to Berlin swung open - but only at the cost of 70,000 Soviet soldiers and more than 2,000 tanks lost.

May 10, 1940. After seven months of 'phoney war', Germany is launching 'Fall Sißelschnitt' the great offensive in the west against France. Immediatly the entire von Runstedt's Army group A (4th, 12th and 16th armies) enter the rugged Belgian Ardennes Massif, well-known for being impassable... With three Panzerkorps (seven Panzer divisions), von Rundstedt's mission is to surround the main allied forces concentrated in Belgium by cutting in between them and the Maginot line, which stop just before the Ardennes. To complete this manouvre the spearhead of the Army Group A, Guderian's XIXth Panzerkorps (1st, 2nd and 10th PzDiv.), must obtain a rapid breakthrough at Sedan on the Meuse river. After three days of difficult movement in the Ardennes forest, the elite troops of the German army are on the right bank of the Meuse facing the French 2nd Army, mainly made up of reserve troops. To have maximum surprise effect, the attack is launched only with some advanced elements, supported by a short but bloody air raid. That should open the road for the panzers still finding their way through the Ardennes...

With the failure of the Ardennes offensive to achieve a breakthrough, Hitler began to look to Alsace, which had been weakened by the pull out of the 3rd Army for the Bulge. On the 22nd of December, Heeresgruppe G was authorized by Hitler to begin planning and rebuilding the forces allocated for the attack. Three days later, Hitler, von Runstead and Blaskowitz reviewed the plans and approved the attack, code named Nordwind, for New Year's Eve! Under command of the German First Army they would launch a major thrust. The main attack with four refitted infantry divisions would attack east of Bitche through the mountains with the objective of seizing the road Wingen-Wimmeneau-Ingweiler which would allow them to utilize their Panzer Divisions to debouch from the mountains to link up with an attack from Himmler's "High Command OberRhine" from a bridge head across the Rhine north of Strasbourg coordinated with the 19. Armee's attack from the Colmar bridgehead. If these two drives linked up as planned 7th Army would not only be split but the VI Corps to the north would be trapped.
