Interview by Questoes e argumentos (July 2016)

Greetings, thank you for giving this interview to our blog “Questões e Argumentos”, it’s an honor for us make this interview, as being for you the year 2016? And what are your plans for the future?
Thank you! As of now, we're done recording and in the final stage of mixing our debut album. We're going to release a promotional 3-song cd-single that we will have for sale and also sent to labels in hopes of them releasing our full length. A teaser will soon be available on our YouTube channel as well. That is our main focus right now and we kind of put playing live on hold for a while, unless something really interesting shows up, like a gig out of town or similar.

What is the current lineup of the band?
The only original member left is me. All the others who started this band with me have reached certain stages in their lives where some quit music, some had too many bands and had to cut down, families, change of music taste etc. So the line up today is: Christos on guitar, Ollie on vocals, Peter on drums and Johan on bass.

What are your main musical influences?
I can get inspired from practically everything. If I'm seeing a band perform I can imagine and hear a completely different drum pattern than what the drummer is actually playing and I'll make a note of it on my phone. Sometimes it's more about the flow and the rhythmic pattern than actual riffing most of the time and we used to do that all the time with my first drummer. He would play something on the drums and I would come up with a riff that fits his playing. Personally, I have a hard time coming up with the easy stuff. I think that the riffs are the most important part of playing metal, so it's more natural for me to write a busy riff, almost a bit progressive. Bands that influence me are less nowadays, but as always Rotting Christ, Hatespawn, Vader and old Morbid Angel. Not that you will necessarily hear it in my music.

How has been the impact of "Flesh of the Forsaken" around the world?
We had some good reviews and a few less good. Overall people have liked it, but I think it could have had a better impact if we had used a real drummer which was the plan. We programmed drums and used pre-programmed presets when we were in between drummers, with the plan to replace them with real drums as soon as we had gotten a new one, but by then the whole process had taken so long due to the bassplayers illness (who also did the recording and mixing) that I just wanted the EP to be released. The original 100 copies are all gone though. We did 15 tapes as a limited edition thing and sold those out too along with cd-r versions with black and white covers. As of now, we have 25 copies with colour printed paper covers that we will send out with the first 25 orders of our new promo that we will release soon.

When will be the next band’s concerts? Let the dates to our readers.
We don't have anything planned except for a part in November to Dismember 2016 in Bucharest, Romania. We were going to play last year but it got canceled. So, that's the only thing we have for this year so far. Of course we will do some sort of release party, but I can't tell when.

What bands you have heard nowadays?
If we are talking new bands then your own Nervosa is one that I like. Putrefied Remains from Malaysia is another one that I like and they play Greek style black metal. Other than that, I'm kind of listening to the old stuff like Anthrax, Rotting Christ, Kiss, Motörhead, Priest, Maiden and old school hiphop right now. The other guys in the band listen to a variety of different stuff as well.

What are the main inspirations for the compositions of the band's lyrics?
The inspiration comes both from strange topics and stories that Ollie reads about, and also from personal experiences and his own imagination. It's fun to take a scenario or event and put your own twist to it. For example, what if Linda Blair in the Exorcist wasn't possessed by a religious spirit and therefore made the exorcism completely futile? Would they ever see their daughter again? There you have the song "Assailant of the Weak". And the song "Swarming Spectres" is about Ollie's own experience with sleep paralyses and such things.

Where it’s possible to purchase band’s merchandise stuff? cd’s, t-shirts, etc ?
All the old music is available digitally for free at our bandcamp page (phidion.bandcamp.com) and you can buy t-shirts and we have a few cassettes left as well. And soon we will have the single available as well. Either you do it there or send an email to phidion@yahoo.com
