Sounds good, Len. Yeah -- those are very nice units. I've got the 1200 baud
unit -- but since I use it only when traveling, that's no problem (have a 2400
baud internal in my work computer and the Expert 24e on this system).

This should be easy. I used the Z88 PipeDream for a spreadsheet for expenses
on a recent trip. When I returned home I tried to upload the spreadsheet into
my word processing program (WordPerfect) in the usual manner. I cannot get
just what appears on the screen in PipeDream's spreadsheet. In other words,
when I transfer the file I end up seeing all of the formula and not the
resulting values. I don't want to transfer a working spreadsheet, I just want
to transfer what would appear on the screen in PipeDream. Anyone have any
ideas?

Subj: Good Z88 Review

This weeks MacWeek Magazine has a very nice review of the Z88 which is
probably the best I've read so far. Apparently the people at Macweek actually
use Z88's to do REAL WORK (can you imagine that). In fact the author wrote the
article on a Z88.
I'm sorry that I can't give you the vol. or issue number, but it's the last
one I've received as of 7/1/89.
By the way, has anyone heard any more about the outlining program that's
supposed to be available from the UK?
Also, I use rechargable ni-cads with no problem...I just keep a few charging
all the time at the house and office.
Another general question...supposedly there is a "hard cover" for the Zed
which is supposed to be available soon...What other "containers" have the rest
of you used to haul around your Zed, and with what kinds of results?

The outliner was developed at last reports -- and was awaiting the printing of
the manuals when I called Tony Kaye at Wordmongers about 3 weeks ago. The
hard cover is available in U.K., but I have not found them available here yet.

The Outliner sounds a bit "exotic" from Tony's description -- but I will buy
one ASAP and provide a full review here (I'm a dyed-in-the-wool outliner
user!). Also have a cover on order, when they materialize on these shores.

I'm curious about the relative merits of the various commercial online
services, such as GEnie, The Source, Compuserve, etc. It seems even
more confusing than trying to compare and evaluate the competing long
distance carriers! I should say that I have no need of invester
services, business news, and such. I don't yet own a PC or Mac, and so
users' forums for various brands would not yet concern me--with the
exception, of course, of my trusty "Z". I am intrigued by the promise
of greater convenience, freedom, powerful resources, fun, networking,
etc. (you know, the old "better living through chemistry" stuff), and
am curious as to whether any of the various services deliver on this
promise for those not in the financial community.

Please mention favorite services/networks, features/benifits, as well
as what you consider misleading or of dubious value.

P.S. My concerns/interests include intentional communities, barter,
human-powered & alternative transportation/apropriate technology,
environmental action, organic farming, music, the transformation
of human culture through an across-the-board, public, global
ongoing forum committed to rigorous inquiry, creative
experimentation and courageous implementation of designs that
promote authentic, sustainable human well-being (and other
interesting shit.)

Without question, CompuServe is the biggest. I think it's also the best, for
general purposes. But there is not one modicum of Z88 support there. GEnie
does have Z88 support, but there is nothing there which is not here (and a
whole lot less there than here). GEnie is cheaper -- but hugely MORE
expensive if you want to use it in the daytime. And I find the message system
in CompuServe to be more friendly in its operating methods; GEnie's software
is not very "personal" (e.g., you address messages to "topics" not people, in
the BBS system -- and I find that awfully impersonal).

I looked long and hard for a cassette case that was just big enough fo rthe
Z88 -- most are too long and too short or similar. I finally found one at
Kmart and it even had a pocket. I yanked the inside plastic divider out and
then stuck some foam in it with a cutout for the Z88. This works, but it's not
too hot if you want to carry more than one or two cables and batteries. (BTW:
The first week I had this case, the zipper broke and I had to take it back to
Kmart. I threw the receipt away because "of course I'm not going to take this
back". The insides were torn out (and thrown away) -- and they still took it
back. What a country.)

I've decided to get a Z88, and have put my 100 up for sale. Is there any
support here on the east coast, such as any BBS's, if not a friend of mine
runs a Tandy 100 BBS, and I might try and talk him into supporting the Z88 (or
I might just start that BBS I've been talking about for so long, maybe).
Thanks again for the access, and sorry for tying up the board for so long.

I have had very good results with the standard Z88 soft case sold by
Cambridge North America (I think.) When I first got my Z88 I found out that it
could be turned on only if the two shift keys were pressed when _no other_
keys were also being pressed. That is, if jammed into a briefcase with lots of
papers, the machine will (should) not turn on even if your papers are pressing
on the two shift keys, as long as they are also pressing on other keys. I haul
my Z88 around in a soft briefcase full of papers and other junk, and have had
only one time since I got the machine last December when I believe it _might_
have been turned on in the briefcase.

Regarding ni-cads, I seem to remember someone who was selling two half length
ni-cads and a holder, so five batteries could be used in a space designed for
four. Phil may have more info on this than I do. I always use alkaline
batteries, since I like the long life and the fact that they do not lose their
charge if I do not use the machine for a week or so.

A previous message mentioned running the batteries down so low that the
machine would not work, and not losing any files. I have do that, by mistake
twice in the past month. I tried to turn on the Z88, and the screen was dead
or just a bunch of lines----yet all the files were there when new batteries
were installed. I don't recommend this, but don't panic if you batteries do go
down. Do a quick change and then see if your files are OK.

I tote mine around in a black vinyl portfolio type thing, with real
neat simulated brass corners and no handle (didn't want one!). There's
room for the Z88 and plenty of papers. What's really neat is; I bought
it at Target on sale for half price (@ $8,I should have bought 2), and
the icing on the cake is that the mfg's trademark is "CAMBRIDGE"
embossed in gold under the main flap. I've never had that weird turn
itself on thing happen. To hit both shift keys at random, without
hitting any other key....hmmmm....

I find myself using Compuserve simply because it is the largest. My favorite
use for it, particularly with the Z88 and a pocket modem is sending fax
message from my laptop. Following a suggestion I saw in MacUser, I used this
facility to get a print out of a Z88 file while I was on a business trip by
hooking the modem into the hotel phone and sending a fax message to the hotel
through Compuserve. Slick & fun!

Phil-I noticed that since I began using my new Worldport 2400 modem,
Z88COM hasn't been auto redialing on a busy signal! What might cause
this singular observed difference? Also, I've noticed that the LED
marked "HIGH SPEED" lights as soon as the modem is plugged into the
Z88, signifying that the Worldport is awake, and awaiting
"conversation". I have wondered if it might not be possible
(preferreable?) through alternate wiring or internal switch settings to
allow "Moe" to sleep until Z88COM (or Z-Term) requires its services.

Also, I recently wanted to move several files into a newly created
sub-directory, for convenience, and could not remember, nor could I
ascertain a way to "grab them" en masse, and move them. I can't
beleive there isn't some way to do that. I tried various experiments
using Copy from root and subdirectories, but could not figure out how
to do it, other than copying all the files into one big file--obviously
absurd! Please say the magic words if they exist.

A*L*S*O, I have inquired in the past about any knowledge of the printer
codes and wiring details to allow the use of the Z88 with
Apple Imagewriter printers. I noticed another inquiry of an
identical nature--anyone out there know anything about this?

I guess I shouldn't even frame a question regarding the
Laserwriter and PostScript!

While doing a little research at the library, I stumbled onto an old
article in "Business Week" Feb.27 89 in the "Developments to Watch"
column. Anamartic, a spinoff of Sinclair Research Ltd.(& Cambridge)
has been working with "wafer scale" technology, whereby they utilise
the silicon chip whole as opposed to slicing it up into smaller
conventional chips. The quoted capacity of the whole wafer was 100
megabits. I'm not sure if this is before or after being mapped out by
the control chip (which is printed on the wafer) that ferrets out the
unusable portion of the chip. This is not brand new stuff as "BYTE"
wrote a great article on this (1985?) by Dick Pountain. What sounded
nifty is the mention that they (Anamartic Inc. of Cupertino Ca.) were
in cohorts with Fujitsu (a large Japanese company). Perhaps with
decent enough backing they can do something good with the concept
(or at least make a buck). I wonder if this technology is directly
applicable to a laptop?..and if so???

Subj: on-line services/BIX

BIX is by far the best of the services (OK, I'm prejudiced -- I'm the
executive editor of the BYTE Information Exchange). None of the commercial
services that I know of offers anything resembling real support for Z88s. This
is the place for that. GEnie has an area for Z88 talk, but I'd hate to have to
rely on that for support. We don't have any formal Z88 area on BIX, but there
are a few users there: Ezra Shapiro, Larry Loeb, Jerry Pournelle, and me, at
least.xD

The other stuff on BIX ranges from APL to ZenithxD computers, neural networks,
hypertext, current events, international regional conferences (Switzerland,
Britain, Germany, etc., and Bay Area, Los Angeles, Boston, etc.),
telecommunications, files for downloading, real-time chat, super
science-fiction and writers conferences, dozens of vendors doing official
support of their products....

We also have great pricing. Since BIX is the electronic component of BYTE
magazine, we sell it like a magazine. A three-month subscription costs $39
(actually, it's a one-year sub for $156 billed in 4 quarterly installments).
That gives you unlimited access to BIX, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It
includes everything but your phone charges. If you dial directly into our
Boston computer (617-861-9767), your only phone charge comes from the
telephone company. If you use Tymnet to get to us, we'll bill you $2/hour for
evening, weekend and holiday use, $8/hour for business-day use. Or we can
provide unlimited "off-peak" Tymnet for $15 a month. Tymnet defines "off-peak"
as being 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. weekdays, all day weekends, and all day major
holidays. Tymnet claims to be a local phone call for 85% of the phones in the
U.S.

If you have questions, give me a call at work, 800-227-2983. I usually around
from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern.

there is a program on mine in AREA 1 called EPCHK.CLI which you can use to
see if all the bits in the EPROM have actually been erased after exposure to
UV light.

Since EPROMS with commercial programs (like PC BIOS) are delivered with the
erasing window covered by a piece of paper, I assume that normal daylight, or
even normal light from fluorescent lamps will eventually erase an EPROM. The
question is, how long does it take?

Subj: EPROM erasing

If you do decide to leave the EPROM on a window sill to use sun light to erase
your data, I believe the window better be _open_. The EPROM is erased with UV
light, and normal glass absorbs most of the UV from the sun. The small window
on the EPROM is probably made of quartz, which transmits UV. In addition, the
lamp in the EPROM eraser is made of either quartz or a special kind of glass
designed to transmit UV. That is why you can not use a normal fluorescent lamp
to erase the EPROM.

I did leave one of my EPROMs outside yesterday for about 1 hour in bright sun
light. This was a very short test, but nothing happened. I was getting
concerned about the effect of the heat on the other electronics. (The sun puts
out lots of infared in addition to UV.) But, perhaps I am being too
conservative here, and the sun would be a find eraser.

To those concerned, according to the specs I got with my eprom eraser, the
required exposure to erase an eprom using solar radiation is from around 4 to
30 hours (depending on eprom sensitivity), IF you don't have an atmosphere,
which fortunately for us humans we do. Ozone absorbs pretty well in that band,
you will probably grow old waiting for
the sun to erase an eprom on the planets surface. The purchase of an eraser is
well worth it if you use them for file storage. I got a little one for 40
dollars which works great, about 5 minutes erase time. (Had to grind the
plastic case a little to get it to take Z88 eproms though). Richard

I can't believe that amidst all this silly talk of solar eprom erasing
no one bothered to answer your simple and earnest inquiry. I shall
then do it forthwith!

The method is as follows:
1.While in first document select text to be "cut" by delineating a
"block" ("<>Z" selects begining and end of "block" (<>=diamond key))

2.Once you have thus marked a block of text (it will appear in "reverse
video" on the screen) type "<>FS", give the block a teoay ( use
"bloc") then move down to the "Save marked block" option, and "Y", n i
ETR.
You have just "cut".
To "paste":

1. In second document, move cursor to the place where you wish to "paste"
the text from the first document

2. Type "<>FL", and the name of your block, (In my case, "bloc") then
move
down to "Insert at slot" option and type "Y", and hit "ENTER"

You have now "pasted".

You should now go to the Filer ("[]F" and position the cursor on the
temporaary
file you created for your block while you were moving it ("bo"hi "ENTER", thus
"selecting" it, andte oeoe ote"OMNS ito the left, and sEtr""a h rmt n hnECp ak

I haven't used the Z88 to drive an Imagewriter yet, but I think that the
cable would be pretty simple. The Imagewriter is configured as a null moded
device. So rig a cable that would connect the serial output of the z88 to the
input of the Imagewriter, and the input of the z88 to the output of the
Imagewriter. The last connection would be the signal grounds of both devices
straight across. Unfortunately, I don't currently have an imagewriter or
manual, so can't tell you which of the pins on the Mini-Din 8 pin connector on
the Imagewriter are which.
I'm about to be on the road for a while; wish I could have found out how to

Subj: Letter to Dvorak's latest blast

Re: PC Magazine, August 89

Dear John Dvorak,

Perhaps you could tell me just what it is that makes a Z80 an 8 bit
processor, whereas the 8088 is a 16 bit processor. They both have 16
bit wide registers. They both address a linear 64K of memory. The only
difference between the two is that the 8088 actually uses 20 bits (not
16) for its address lines, and lets you map your four 64K pages within
the 1024K space (and the 8088 has hardware multiply and divide). How do
you get an 8 bit Z80 out of all of this and still call an 8088 16 bit?

Regarding the Z88. My main base is a 20mhz 386, and I used to haul
around a T1200. I've trashed the T1200 in exchange for a Z88. If the
Z88 is such an oddball, why is the software built into the machine's
ROMs more useful than anything I had in my DOS portable? How many
laptops do you know of that cost about $700, and allow you to have as
many concurrent sessions of a word processor running as memory allows?
The Z88 supports 1.5M of memory invisibly. Can you say the same about a
DOS machine? And this memory doesn't get absorbed just by your
program's code (since its in ROM). I could use a twelve pound DOS
laptop with something like Sidekick Plus and still not have the
convenience I have in this Z88. It won't ever run Autocad or Pagemaker,
but that is not what its made for. It is ideal for someone who needs to
write on the go. Maybe even a columnist like yourself.

Of course, I fully expect you to write this letter off as one of the
sick people belonging in the weird underground. I do wish you would try
something new and different instead of rearing away and loudly
condemning it. You might be pleasantly surprised.

Yours truly, etc.

Thanks for the great review, John. Too bad our favourite columnists
don't actually *use* the machines they dump all over.

Subj: Outliner for Z88

I now have THINKz from Wordmongers in the U.K. in my Z88. $89.95 from Sharp's
in VA, on a 32K ROM. It seems a bit UKaddian (i.e., different) when compared
to the standard PC outliners, but it seems quite servicable.

If you've ever used THINK.IT in a Model 100 (hasn't everyone!!!), it operates
much as in the View 2 mode of that program. Onscreen, you see the headings of
the level you are in, and above them the heading they are under in bold face
-- or the title heading if you are at the top level. You can link a series of
headings so that you can easily move around related areas of the outline. And
you can mark a heading and move it -- with all subordinate headings taken
along for the ride.

Output can be to a printer, to a plain-text Pipedream file, or to a file
compatible with Lotus Agenda. No numbers/lettering is provided -- but a
simple utility program can be written to take care of that (I have one I did
in GW-Basic for Ready! which may be adaptable).

So far I like it. But it is a very early version (v1.00 with manual V0.02),
and could have bugs; in fact, there is a "limited testing" caveat in this
draft of the manual. Hmmmm...guess that makes me a paying (vs. paid) Beta
Tester.

No matter. With SpellMaster (w/QuickEdit), THINKz and Z88COM the Z88 will
take care of my most important needs when traveling. If you are an Outliner
Freak (I seem to be), you will sure find it better than the Z88 alternative
programs (None!!).

Dave, since transfers fromn the Z88 to QL work, the QL xmodem must support
CheckSum. But there may be an issue going the other way. Possibly the QL
sender assumes CRC and is not toggling out of that to Checksum as needed for
all Z88 xmodem programs to date. The sender should wathch for C's and NAK's
from the receiver. If the first three characters are not C's (meaning
receiver wants CRC) then sender should go Checksum.

Zterm for the Z88, from U.K., does not do this right -- and I cannot upload to
Compuserve with it as a result. This may be the issue. Could be the U.K.'ers
do a different set of protocols.

See if you can Force Checksum at the QL end.

I haven't spent ANY time on QL<-->Z88 lately. Have you tried all the
Checksum/CRC/etc/etc options in all the QL comm programs.

I couldn't even write a transfer program that worked using the protocol that
was "detailed" in the Z88 users guide. But I could modem you or mail you what
I have so you could see what's going wrong. It might help with our Xmodem
problems, but hhen it might just confuse things.

I talked to Sharp's today and he said the covers were 15.95. What a deal. I
didn't ask him, though, if they went all the way around or just cover the
front. Have you gotten yours yet? How does it work and how do you like it?

They don't cover the entire computer, just the top and down the sides. they
do not slip off easily (according to Mark) and do protect the screen and the
two shift keys (no accidental turn on). I should be gettiing one by Monday
via UPS, so I will let you know.

The Q_Link terminal program has both CRC and Checksum and you can switch
between the two. Right now I am using the commercial transfer program which
seems to work well for ascii transfers. I found that using xmodem and a PC at
work is quite a bit faster though. I will continue to try Z88 - QL xmodem.

Oopie... QL--Z88

I've been simply printing to QLINK for my ASCII files. I set it up at 9600
baud and just hook the cable you taught me how to make up between the two. I
capture it with QLINK. Save it in ram disk. Switch to quill with taskmaster
and import. Quick and fairly painless, but it does omit the bold, underline,
and stuff. I experimented with customizing a printer driver to send whatever
Quill needs for these. I got it to work once -- almost. But I think Quill only
import $20 or above. Then I figured if I dabbled any more, I might end up with
a poorman's QL-LINK package. And that's not worth it with the price as low as
it is.

BUT.... aren't there some setbacks with the commecial QL-LINK? If there are,
it might just be worth coming up with an alternative. Not me though. I don't
have time or ABILITY.

Enough rambling. Maybe someday we'll get xmodem QL<---->Z88. Who knows.

able to test it. I don't have access to a second Z88. Dave

Are you hooking up to Ser1? If you are, I would also guess it would work
Z88-Z88. A few months ago a guy had two Z88s and couldn't come up with a
cable. Nobody could help because everybody only had one. That's where it pays
to have a QL and a Z88 I guess. But since the Parallel I/F works on Ser1 as
well as Z88 serial, that means there at least real close.

Good job! I'll modify my QL-Z88 next chance I get.

Subj: Mdv_ emulation

Dave, I don't know if you've been watching the Bull Pen or not, but Mike
Carver (I think) had mentioned something about finding a use for the extra
expansion port on the RIGHT side of the QL... you know the mdv expansion port.
With disk drives hooked up who needs six more microdrives hooked up (8 total)?
Good point.

Well, I have come up with a simply marvelous use for the port. Hook it up to
the Z88 and let the Z88 "emulate" the six microdrives. No need for xmodem or
using up a serial port or anything. My guess is the speed is 19200 baud
(perfect for the Z).

:ram.0 = mdv3_
:ram.1 = mdv4_
:ram.2 = mdv5_
:ram.3 = mdv6_
:ram.- = mdv7_
:scr.0 = mdv8_ (This even sounds interesting)

Sound good so far? You wouldn't really need to even write a QL program for
this to work if the Z88 end was written right (unless you wanted to refer to
the drives as :ram.1 on the QL end instead of mdv4_).

With this you could use the fancy QL file commands (wildcards, etc.) to
transfer back and forth to the Z88). If you were to type FORMAT mdv6_ and you
had an EPROM in it, the Z** would return a Copy Protect or Damaged Medium
notice back to the QL. Arranged like this, the Z88 would "become" the solid
state disk drives that Sir Clive loves so much -- it would be a RAM drive that
would keep its memory even when the power was off, lightning fast and
everything. If somebody had a QL with no disk drives and a Z88, this would be
REAL slick.

Some things that might cause problems: microdrives hold around 220 sectors, a
512K RAM/EPROM would have to report 1024 sectors. QDOS might not appreciate
that (then consider the 1 meg RAM/EPROM/ROMs -- it would have to report 2048
sectors). Also, I assume the six additional midcrodrives would have switches
on them that would tell QDOS which is which. This would have to be
accomplished with software. Another thing is that in my QL library (a little
one I admit) I have no information on the signals on the 14-connection edge
card.

It's beyond my knowledge. So who ya gonna call?

Nuge. This looks like a job for NUGE. At least maybe he could point us in the
right direction.
This would be a hotcake seller in Britain!!!
What does everyone else think? Is this stupid? [Curtis]
