There are lot's of possibilities. Need more info. Are the programs you
download .BAS files or .CLI files? If the latter, see CLI2BAS.TIP in file
area 2. In general, see UPDOWN.HLP in file area 1 for how to do download.
ARe you using xmodem or some other protocol?

Rick, please describe just exactly what it IS you are doing, and we can help.

Well, if it is a binary file (.BAS here) loading it into PD and saving it will
mess it up. If not a binary file, he needs to do the CLI2BAS trick using <>EX
in the filer, per CLI2BAS.TIP.

Subj: Cambridge Topper

The Topper is a tightly-fitted black plastic cover for the top of the Z88. It
has special provisions to prevent accidental turn on of the computer in a bag
or briefcase. Also keeps the keyboard clean and protects the display.

I just received mine from Sharp's in Mechanicsville, VA and it is well worth
the price (with second-day UPS and all it was right around $20). This is the
kind of thing I often by a second one of to have a spare.

The Topper turns the Z88 into a black plastic "brick" (hmmmm, mor of a
waffle!) that you can carry around sans case. Looks good, fits good and DOES
prevent those scarey accidental turn ons while in a bag.

Get one!!

Now I did some further experimentation and came up with a cable that works
with xmodem at 9600 baud. I Killed my last message. This should be the last
cable. The cable is wired as follows: 2 --- 3, 3 --- 2, 7 --- 7. Z88 pin 8 to
QL pin 4. Pin 4 is connected to pin 5 on Z88 side. Pin 8 is connected to pin 9
on Z88 side. There are no jumpers on QL side. Thats it! Xmodem at 9600 baud in
both directions between the Z88 and the QL. Dave P.S. I don't think this will
work as Z88 - Z88.

Subj: Loading Files in Pipedream without typing the name

When I bought my Z88, I was told that there was no way to load in a
file into Pipedream (or anything else) except by typing in its name
(and its directory). But I have found a way to do so without typing
out the name.

I open a blank Pipedream document by selecting Pipedream in the
Applications list in the Index. While in this blank file I type
"<>FL" and I am prompted to type in the name of my file, BUT I
DON'T. Instead I type a "[]F" which puts me in Filer and I select
the file I want and hit . A flag goes up by my selected
file. I then hit which returns me to the Pipedream "Name of
file to load" prompt WITH MY SELECTED FILE'S NAME AUTOMATICALLY
INSERTED. All I do then is hit and file loads in. By the
way, while you're in Filer, you don't have to scroll around to find
your document, you can use Name Match (or "<>NM") to reduce your
choices to those matching some string element in your desired file's
name.

I can do this to load an old document by itself, or I can use this
to merge documents. Also, I use this when I have just created a new
document and want to be able to save updated versions of it without
having to retype the name. Right after saving it, I use this
approach to load the very document I'm in and overwrite the document
with its own named self. Then each time I want to save it, the new
document's name is already fed into the "Name of file to save"
prompt.

The only problem I have is that I haven't yet found a way to get the
Z88 to open a directory without typing in its name. However, once
you do get into the directory and find, select, and flag the file
you seek, all you need do is hit and the file and its
directory path are listed at the load prompt, requiring only an
to get it to load.

Dave,
When in PipeDream you can give a file a name that will display in the
suspended activities list and save to by issuing the <>FC command.
When in Filer, you can traverse directories with SHIFT up-arrow and SHIFT
down-arrow. SHIFT up-arrow will take you to the parent directory (if any) and
SHIFT down-arrow will take you to the subdirectory under the cursor.
Most of these are in the manual. It is worth re-reading to pick-up the
obscure little tricks. I recommend using small post-it-notes in the right
margin to create a suppliment to the inadequate index.

When I hit "HELP" from within Pipedream, I USED TO get the following as the
top two lines:

Pipedrem 'Trig. Functions'
COS(radians), SIN(radians), TAN(radians)

This is just the Trig Functions page of the Pipedream help.

Now for some reason, when I hit "HELP", I get the following as my first two
lines:

Trig. Functions | Relational Operators
Log. Functions | Wildcards

This is just a menu for the help available. It's real nice, but I've never
seen it until now. Am I just weird or does everyone get the menu.

(If by some strange "fortune", you get the former of these two examples, try
typing []ZZ- or []Z---- or []-----. ([] is the box key)

I think I've flipped my lid, but let me know what you get when y'all press
"Help".

Thanks.

Yes the developers guide does, but it has to be in an application EPROM, any
of the built in applications can have help in an EPROM, which will override
the default help. The help interface is a nice idea, there just isn't anything
there for the standard rom applications (except a little for pipedream). What
would be nice is for someone to come out with an extensive help rom. One of
these days if someone doesn't beat me
to it I plan on coming up with a help compiler which will allow the easy
creation of help eproms (since the z88 can burn its own), but I won't have
time to get around to it for a few months. The developers guide does describe
how to do, and even has a sample program to add help to import/export.

Subj: Z88COM/2400

Can't answer what I don't know about. I don't own a WP2400, just the 1200
model -- and I have no such problem. In fact I never use my Z88 with a 2400
baud modem (having only the one that's tied to this BBS permanently). Could
be that Z88COM does not like to redial at 2400 baud -- tho that should not be
the case and no one else has reported such a problem.

I know that Z88COM, by using the integral VT-52 terminal emulator, has
limitations in the systems it can call. But it does work with THIS system
(which is the main reason I put it together). And to add its own terminal
emulator, with selectable params, would be a bigger undertaking than I am up
to.

As you may have noticed, I am not very active here these days -- just
maintaining the BBS. Other things in my life, both professional and personal,
are limiting my participation to that. And the personal part of that (an
on-going divorce) may result in the BBS going away altogether in time. No
plans along those lines yet, however -- and I may be able to have more time
when the high-trauma weeks pass. But highest priority is work work, as you

I do not know how to make a BASIC program unlistable. In BASICs where you can
define procedures and call them strictly with their name (ie. PAINT) rather
than with PROC (ie. PROC_PAINT or similar), you can create a bogus procedure
called LIST, one called EDIT, and whatever else. But in Z88 BBC BASIC, that
doesn't work.

If you included this question in your letter to Richard Haw for a specific
reason, you might be interested to know that ZFU is not a BASIC program. It is
just some sort of machine language code that loads in with one. This is my
understanding of it.

If I find time and knowledge, though, I'll play around with LIST protecting.

As far as I know, if you cannot erase a file and get a "file in use" message
even though the file is NOT in use, you have to do a "soft reset" to clear
things up. This will close all your applications, but will not erase any
files. A soft reset is done by pressing the reset button on the side of the
machine with the plastic ROM/RAM cover CLOSED! (IF YOU PRESS THE RESET BUTTON
WITH THE PLASTIC COVER OPEN, YOU WILL DO A HARD RESET WHICH WILL ERASE
EVERYTHING!!!!!)

After the soft reset you will probably have to restore the PANEL []S
to its previous settings, and perhaps have to reset the clock. (I don't
remember about these two anymore.) Make sure that RAM.- is empty prior to the
soft reset.

Phil,

This note has little to do with the Z88, but you have mentioned that you

I am managing a large R&D program with lots of people, technical issues
and action items. I have a good project planner (Timeline 3) which I use to
generated budget and timing estimates, but it is not very good for following
an R&D project where the path keeps changing as you learn more about the
problem.

I have begun useing PC OUTLINE to keep track of the technical issues,
suggested solutions, data which resloves the issue, and related ideas. I have
also been noting the action items associated with resolving each of the
issues.

My problem is that the action items are buried in the outline of the
technical issues. I would like to keep a separate list of action items and due
dates, but have it automatically linked to the the issues list. Is there any
good way to do this?

its WP-2 portable wordprocessor, a Tandy

expandable internally to 96K of non-
volatile RAM, with a 100,000-word spell
checker and a 200,000-word thesaurus in
ROM, all packed into a 3.1-pound package
that will retail for $349. It will have
both parallel and serial ports, just
like the 102, plus it can be hooked to
the Tandy Portable Disk Drive 2, and for
sending and receiving data you will have
either a 1,200 or 2,400 bps snap-on
portable modem option. The old 300 bps
internal modem, which came with the
other Tandy portables, is out. I think
this machine, from the little I know, is
going to be unbeatable and the
affordable portable of choice for many,
many people. Incidentally, I left you a

The WP-2, as I understand it, is a dedicated wordprocessor, which will also
allow you to telecommunicate but I don't think it comes with BASIC. Without
Basic, I'm curious how it uses the Tandy Disk Drive 2. There are still a lot
of questions, such as: What kind of processor does it use? Can the "IC Card"
RAM expansions be programmed? Why does the printer cable cost $35? Who wrote
the software for it: Microsoft, Tandy or someone else? The thing looks good
in the catalog, but the software, I'm sure, is more complex than that of the
early Tandy portables. There are a lot more function key options, for one
thing. Oddly enough, it's all black, like the Z88. I'll let you know more
when I find out more. It will be introduced to the world on Oct. 30. So on
that day cruise on down and take a look at most any Radio Shack store.

Pat, no secret re TDD-2 w/o Basic. None of the OS's for TDD in the 100/102

whether you can "roll your own" programs. For example, an outline processor
would be a must for my "word processor" and a spreadsheet is often a handy
thing, too. Much less valuable (to me) is a thesaurus (since I tend to have
mine in my head).

It will be an interesting beastie. But I'd rather have a Tandy 102 with an 80

slowing down be setting the pacing parameter in Z88COM (line 90) to a bigger

Note that there are a number of systems on which the VT-52 emulator in the Z88

No way a Z88 or anything will come close to an HP-17B or other dedicated

Subj: Z88 EPROM problem

I am having trouble with eprom cards. I'm using a file transfer program on
EPROM from cambridge (Z88 to Mac link) and suddenly I can no longer access the
program. I have the card in slot 3 and it usually appares as the last item on
the index, but it no longer is there. When I do a <>CARD from the index I the
EEPROM does not show up, though when I move a RAM card to slot 3 it responds
fine. Is there a problem with my machine or something else. (I have a
duplicate EPROM card for Z88 to mac and it does the same thing.)

Remember, Bill, that when you install and remove an Eprom you must be at the
Index with the machine on. Otherwise, the operating system will not recognize
the card.

Also, best not to have a RAM card in slot 3 -- will use batteries much faster.

Rick,

You need more than 32K of RAM to run most Basic programs. Until you get at
least 128K in slot 1 (must be in slot 1!), Basic is limited to 8K of memory.
So only very small programs can be run. Suggest you buy a 128K RAM (or better,
512K).

It is definatly finding the cardbase files because it prints out the "Cardbase
Initializing..." string before it dies. The problem seems to be coming from
the fact that the dbx and ndx files were padded when I finally got them on my
Z88. If I do not touch either file, I get a "Bad File" error on the "USE"
command. If I take off the extra chars (THey show up as inverted '3's in
pipedream) I get a "Bad index error" and it I take them off the index too,
Pipedream expands the dbx file untill it fills up memory. Do you remember if
you had this problem, and if so, what did you do to fix it. Thanks, Michael

Well, its kinda long story. but a fully expanded Z88 must have at least 128K
in slot 1. That makes 40K available for Basic. With 32K there is only 8K
available for Basic. There are some other constraints, too.

Must be a file somewhere on this subject; I will look for it.

Say, Mark, as long as you call into this board, I've been wondering how to get
spellmaster to save a document without the carriage return at the end of each
line. I've been using it as a word processor, instead of pipedream, since it
is a little more convenient as a text processor, and since I read that I could
export without these pesky returns. However, whenever I choose save, or save
for export, I get them anyway. What am I going wrong. I am sending them over
to my mac for use in writenow. I've been sending them with the export program,
into smartcom on the mac. Is this my problem? Would it work better if I use
the Maclink program instead? Thanks for any light you can shed.

Gee, Brent -- as best I remember, when I use save for Export I get CR's only

with Mac exports, but that would surprise me.

Subj: garbage continued

Phil-
I think you correctly identified the problem causing garbled text
(missing characters all over the place) in longer uploads and downloads
of messages as overloading of the buffer. You suggested that I change
"Pace" (line 90) in Z88COM to 1.0 or so. That did seem to slow down
the transmission of the uploads, but the downloads are worse than ever!
Do I want the value to be lower for downloads and higher for uploads?
If so, this is a real paradox! I don't recall this ever happening
before, and I'm wondering whether it all began when I got the 2400 baud
modem (I was using the 1200 previously)--I think that's about when it
began--also, I still can't get it to auto-redial on a busy signal like
it used to with my 1200. I'm really, as they say in your neck of the
woods, "like, bummed!" For what it's worth, I have never had a problem
with downloads on this board, only on the other boards I've tried
(MicroWorld in Berkeley, and the ZED-88 BBS in VA)--it happens on
continously scrolling things. Is the problem maybe that the CLI
screen-capture function is not fast enough? Too many variables for me
to figure out what's what.
