ARCHIVED BBS MESSAGES -- OCTOBER 1989

Not going well so far, only one serio-comic entry, I'm disappointed to say the
least, but I intend to see it through. I see a lot of new people logging on
looking for entries to download, but they aren't uploading anything, so it
goes I guess. I figured someone would take interest in winning a $100 EPROM or
RAM Cartridge, or a Topper, maybe things will pick up. I've already bought the
Topper to award to the earlybird winner, and it looks like he's going to win
the Cartridge as well. Wanna cartridge the easy way? Hey you folks, these are
real prizes and will be awarded, no nonsense, no false promises. Well thanks
for listening to my woes things will pick up I'm sure!

I tried Z-Term when I first got my Z88, but dropped it in favor of Phil's

while Z-Term does not. I have used Z88COM to transfer files to and from a SUN

notUnfortunately, I do not have Z-Term anymore to test with the SUN.

One simple problem many of us have had caused by having the Xon/Xoff option

around block 17 during the file transfer.

If you need more direct contact or need a copy of xyzmodem, I can be reached

the lateset issue is several months overdue. My conclusion is that they have

There has been alot of new laptop releases lately, from ZENITH
(Minisport),POQUET,ATARI,PSION,SHARP,APPLE,TANDY etc.. Many of them
sound pretty good. I still like the instant on,live environment of the
Z88 though for my "don't leave home without it" machine. The new
portable Macintosh will retain _all_ in RAM in a sleep mode (someone
noticed how the Z88 works) but you have to shell out $6-7 grand to
carry around 15 lbs. (not me). Comdex is coming up soon here in 'Vegas
and I hope to see all these new goodies and anything Cambridge may or
may not have up their sleeve.

I generally agree, Chris. My latest acquisition (company paid!) is a Toshiba
1200HB. Only abt 2 hrs on batteries, due to HD and backlit screen, but I use
it as a plug-in transportable most of the time anyway. That's how I view the
Mac protable -- more of a transportable, due to the weight. But it definitely
will have a following. And its got a super LCD screen!

Best thing I've heard about (words, only) is the Psion MS-DOS lapper.
Supposed to be light and powerful -- and maybe with a reasonable price.
Things are changing!

BTW -- any contact with Tim, etal? And did you solve that problem you
mentioined in an earlier message?

I've made a minor fix to Z88COM, in line 350. The small 'g' should be moved
over next to the big 'G'. The effect of the original error will show up only
if you go to lower cse while running Z88COM in Basic. I never do so I never
have seen it. But a user (Robert Gaylord) found it. Thanks for the find, Bob.

Z88COM.CLI, Z88COM.BAS & Z88COM23.ARC in file area 1 have been updated to
reflect this fix.

I am a new visitor. My name is Teller, and I am 1/2 the comedy/(magic?)

but do have a couple of questions for any sages in the electronic world:
1. Is there a program for translating PipeDream to WordPerfect? (
I like the fact that these are both program-names with capital letters in the
middle of the words.)
2. I am in the New York City area. Are there other users nearby?
And especially, are there Z88 dealers, repair people, etc. nearby?
3. I will be using my Z88 exclusively for words. I don't need all
the spreadsheet functions. Is there any way to turn them off permanently?
(I mean, so I don't have to turn them off every time I call up PipeDream)
cordially,

I prefer SpellMaster, a ROM product from the U.K. Go to file area #2 and read
the file SPELMSTR.REV for more info. It has a good spell checker and an
editor which is more civilized (e.g., can break lines by hitting Enter or join
them with BKSP -- the way you would expect). You can also mark and move
segments of a line (like just one or two words) as I recal -- haven't used
that feature in a while, tho.

Available from Sharp's in VA (see file SHARPS.PRC in File area #2 for more
info).

I also saw the WP-2 last weekend. It has a nice keyboard, like the MOdel 100
and 102, and the size of the characters seem to be slightly larger than the
Z88, but it falls way below the Z88 in all other areas, except perhaps cost.

As far as I can tell, you are correct, there is no spreadsheet or database,
and no BASIC, so you cannot write your own applications. The maximum memory
that Tandy supports is 86K, when you add both the internal 32K RAM expansion
and an external 32K RAM card. It is not clear if the RAM cards have battery
backup, which would allow you to remove them without losing data. The WP-2
does include a wordprocessor with spelling checker and thesaurus, and seems to
include built-in support for the Tandy Portable Disk Drive 2. It weighs 3.1
pounds, 1 pound heavier than the Z88. Oh yes, it does include a terminal
program, TELCOM, which must be just like the program of the same name in the
Model 100/102.

No sale here, I am very happy with my Z88.

That's my reading too, Vic. If what is needed is JUST a writing machine, then
the WP-2 may be a good deal. For many, it may well be. But it is NOT a
computer in the multiapplication sense. At $299 it is probably a good deal.
Too bad they didn't put an 80 column display in the Tandy 102 -- then it would
be more appealing, too.

I'm still whatich for the Tohiba enty into the Ultralite PC game. My guess is
that they will discontinue the T1000 and replace it with a dynamite notebook
machine. Stictly a reading of tea leaves, tho.

Subj: FCC Approval

Sounds like a red herring, Marc. I have yet to see or hear of a Z88 which is
NOT FCC approved. Perhaps some of the very early ones, but ...

In any case, FCC approval is normally done by class -- vs. testing EACH
machine (for various reasons, I have a long history of FCC association). So
even if a particular Z88 was not so approved, likely there would be no issue.
Even if there was, it's hard to imagine the "FCC Police" tracking an
individual owner down and arresting him.

Perhaps a Z88 purchased in the U.K. would not have the stamp -- and there
could even be some slight differences in circuitry. NOT likely in my opinion.
And -- how many have purchased them there?

If you are suggesting that you (i.e., Cambridge North America) have sold some
unapproved units, then the liability is yours, not the owners. And, if that
is the case, leaving a message on a BBS is an inadequate response; must
contact EACH owner and (I would guess, not a lawyer) replace there machines at
your cost. But maybe that is not the issue.

Your message says "check the machine to see if it is FCC approved". What are
you suggesting folks do if it is not?

I've finally got my database program on my PC at work to export my

also programmed my database program to also make a filelist so I can
search through all the records or search and replace etc.and I can sort
them using Richard Haw's PDFLSORT.BAS. The problem is: when I do an
export I may end up with 40-50 different records in one list and my
IMPEXP88 program will recieve batches but not send them,so I would have
to individually send each file to the Z88. Any(inexpensive)ideas?
