But rather than creating name.CLI type cli files and having to []F <>EX name.CLI, I find it tidier and quicker to put all my CLI files into a sub-directory called - well - CLI. Then, by leaving the filetype empty, I can run a CLI file called 'dsort' by mindlessly typing []F<>EX//dsort (as all the sub-dirs are searched). I am a psychiatrist, and use a Z88 a good deal for drafting policy documents, note taking at conferences, preparing publications and latterly, as a field-tool in collecting data for a small research project. -- I use an Amster PCW mainly (printing and comms)- but at work I can link the Z88 with a PC -although I have no comms software for it and I have to transfer all files as Import/Export format. -- I have a small utility (for CP/M) that converts files to and from Imp/Exp format (but it does have a small bug in it- sometimes it don't work!). -- I also have a small BASIC routine for doing same. Might be worthwhile having euch on a BBS as this- microsoft BASIC is pretty convertable to most machines? Thing is if I upload (say) a pipdream spread5heet file that does something, it will be in IMP/EXP format (i.e. no codes less than 32decimal) Read Msg Cmd (?=List)> Conf : Z88 Msg# : 17 Lines: Extended Read: 19 Sent : Feb 25, 1990 at 5:23 PM To : ALL From : CARL LITTLEJOHNS Subj : Z89? Z88 is a truly flexible beast, but needs a couple of modifications I think to be really useful. - 1. Import/Export should have adopted Xmodem (no excuse, its a wildely available protocol, and standard comms programs for any micro would support it.) - 2. There should be a means of protecting data with passwords, or at least a digit-code lock on using the whole computer - 3. CLI files should not need []F <>EX to run, but should (say if placed in a CLI sub-directory) appear to be new commands -bit like .BAT or .SUB files in MSDOS+CP/M. - 4. BOOT.CLI should work from RAM not just EPROM, then a soft reset would be less of a nuisance. As it is I have a RESTART cli which has to be []F<>EX'ed. - 5. Anyone think only having 1 DIARY file available at one time bit limiting. I'd like one file for expenses, another for bithrdays ete ... ALSO the diary needs a NEW funtion, like pipedream has. The number of times my CLI utilities have duplicated all my diary entries overnight .... - 6. The RE232 socket needs a couple of recesses, as standard 9 pin plugs have two r***y great screw heads preventing the plug from connecting properly (I use sticky tape instead). - 7. WHY oh WHY doesn't Z88 like LineFeeds! (mind you if you PRINT the document to the R8232, you get linefeeds...) - Oddly enough, I REALLY LIKE my Z88! Any suggestions for how to improve this format are welcomed. The two programs on the BB are Z88Rcv - this in run like so: C:\>Z88Rcw FileName [port] where filename is the name you want the tank to have and Port is the (optional) port number, either 1 or 2. The resulting file can just be copied back to com1 or 2 in order to restore the data. As i am uploading dozens of files to the BB (as you will agree when u downloai them) I feel that we z88 users need some kind of archive format to as to pack a number of small files into a larger file. I am writing a suite of programs for use by Hydrographic surveyors. To include such delights as Least Squares network adjustment, Tidal prediction, geographical computations, etc. I have found the Z88 ideal for this application, particuarly with the graphics patch, it allows a much more user friendly display than the Psion Organiser and HP41CV, the work horses of surveyors, and is a hell of a lot faster!!. Any Other surveyors writing progs for their z88?? I find pipe dream a boon f keeping equiptment lists and writing reports offshoreRz too. Yours Simon Allen.
