The zona pellucida is a thick, non-cellular layer of glycoprotein that envelopes mammalian eggs when ovulated. The zona pellucida itself, is covered by a corona radiata formed of follicle cells. Due to the fact that the zona pellucida immediately surrounds mammalian oocytes, ovulated eggs and early embryos it is important in species-specific fertilization, post-fertilization blockage and protection. |
