The Venus Transit of 5 -6 June, 2012, in Norway

The view is due east. To the left in the picture (north), next stop is Svalbard.....

I had planned to watch the transit of Venus from the same mountain as I did during last year's Partial Solar Eclipse. To climb the summit now, one needed a 4WD car due to the dirt road’s soft surface (lingering spring conditions). The local weather was also very doubtful, so I went to Lofoten, Norway. The Midnight Sun is accessible all along the horizon from the most northern island in Lofoten; Andøya. Upon arrival, the whole sky was more or less covered with clouds, but as the Sun was setting the sky starts to clear. At first contact and throughout the transit, the sky was perfect!

In 2004 I only saw the later part of the transit. Bad weather obscured the first part of the event, but still as impressive show as this full one.

Venus IS big!

Venus starts to enter the Solar disc a few minutes after local midnight. The Sun still decreases in altitude.
The maximum distance from the solar edge.

Venus is beginning to leave the solar disc. An excellent view through my telescope.
