World Torch Rules

What is a World torch match?

A match in any tournament where the torch holder plays at least three (3) games against an opponent.

Who can get the World torch?

Anyone who beats the torch holder in a tournament.

If it's a draw, the torch holder will keep it.

Which tournaments must the World torch holder enter?

Any tournament that is possible for the torch holder to enter.

If the World torch holder does not enter a legitimate tournament?

The current torch holder automatically loses it and the torch will go to the previous holder.

If that player can't enter the same tournament, he/she will keep the torch.

If that player could but does not enter, check for next previous and so on.

If no previous torch holder enter the tournament then the first match played in the tournament will be the start of a new line.

If the torch holder DO enter the tournament, but withdraws, the torch will be handed over to the previous torch holder.

National Torch Rules

What is a National torch match?

A match in any tournament where the torch holder plays at least three (3) games against an opponent playing for the same country.

Who can get the National torch?

Anyone, playing for the same country, who beats the torch holder in a tournament.

If it's a draw, the torch holder will keep it.

Which tournaments must the National torch holder enter?

EURO, WTC and National Championship (that includes PANAM for USA and PAC for AUS and NZL)

If the National torch holder does not enter a legitimate tournament?

The current torch holder automatically loses it and the torch will go to the previous holder.

If that player does not enter, check for next previous and so on.

If no previous torch holder enter the tournament then the first match played in the tournament (between 2 players from that country) will be the start of a new line.

If there is no match between two players from that country, the current torch holder will keep the torch until next tournament.

If the torch holder DO enter the tournament, but withdraws, the torch will be handed over to the previous torch holder.

Double Torches Rules

There are always two torches in Double.

What is a Double torch match?

A match in any double tournament where the torch holders plays at least two (2) games against an opposing pair.

If the Double torch holders do not enter a legitimate tournament?

If none of the torch holders enters a tournament the torches will go to the previous pair.

If only one of them enter a tournament, that player will keep the torch and the new companion will get the other "for free".

If both enter a tournament, but not together, the pair who plays the first match will get the two torches (or lose them if they lose that match).

Statistics

The statistics count the number of times that you take the torch (by winning a match against the current holder) and the number of times that you successfully defend it (by winning a match against a legitimate opponent while already holding the torch).

If you get the torch without playing for it (by the current holder not entering a legitimate competition), it doesn't count as a torch taken in the statistics. It just gives you an opportunity to defend it as long as possible.

For all lists, World and Nationals, if a player takes the torch the name will be RED. If a player is "given" the torch the name will be PURPLE.

Torch History

In football, there is a World Champion, crowned every 4 years, currently France (Dec 2021). And there is a lesser known Unofficial World Champion (so lesser known that the holders rarely know it's them).

To become Unofficial World Champion, a team has to beat the previous Unofficial World Champion in any match. The first holders were England in 1872 when they beat Scotland. The current (Dec 2021) holders are - France.

The concept of Unofficial World Tantrix Championship (UWTC), later known as the Tantrix Torch was introduced by British player Glynn Ridley (Puddleglum) in 2005, using the same football analogue. Adapting the concept for Tantrix, the criterion "any match" was altered to "any tournament match consisting of at least 3 games", and some rules were added governing situations when a holder doesn't enter their next available tournament. New Zealander player Matt Peek (Pekko), winning three (official) World Tantrix Championships in a row between 2001 and 2003, was assumed to be the initial holder at the end of 2003.

Sadly, Glynn passed away in 2007, survived by his idea: the Torch data has been conscientiously maintained by crowd editing on an online forum board for a long time. Now that the forum is gone, it's great to see that Carola has taken over the ownership (and no doubt added quite a bit of flavour!) to make all these historic pieces of data available to the Tantrix community.

Trivia

  • Typo have never ever failed to take the torch (including double). He also have the longest span between two World Torches. From sep 2003 - may 2016.

  • phildnarud has the longest span between two National Torches. First in may 2001 and the latest in oct 2014.

  • Pellepen have failed taking the torch most times. 13 in National, 4 in World and 2 in Double. That makes 19. He have also played most torch games that went to tiebreak (8). In double he have had the torch three times with three different players, and helding the torch with a fourth player.

  • Noodles is the only player who have had the World Torch representing two different countries (GBR and FRA).

  • fear have won WTC 3 times but only had the World Torch once! The torch didn't reach the WTC-Final in 2011 and 2014, both years with fear as the winner.

  • Although playing for a long time, and successfully, benopi did not play his first World torch match until January 2016 - and took it!

  • The shortest time any player have held the World Torch is 1h 56m. It was trefterke (HUN) who took that record in 2007.

  • The shortest time holding ANY torch is 19 minutes! To do that you really have to plan the whole thing. First you need to play all but one game against an opponent, and play rather badly. Then you challenge the torch holder. Win the torch and right after that match you play the last game against the first opponent, and lose. Thylacine (AUS torch) did just that in 2008.

Thanks

I could not have done this page without these people that I like to thank.

  • Mike (mikem) of course, who invented the game
  • Glynn (Puddleglum) who started the Torch in the first place (see History above)
  • Lennart (Pellepen) who helped me with almost everything and answered at least 1 billion mails!
  • Axel (AxxL) who introduced me to Tantrix and then spotted every (?) litte detail that I may have missed when I made these lists
  • Zoltan (Zormac) for giving me various (and valuable) information and for helping me with the History
  • Vincent (Syagrius) for much help with rule explanation

I will also thank Dave (lytnin) for putting up a link on the tournament pages and Iris (xylotuba) for spreading the word :)

Love you all!!
